+ Can 5900 Health be my primary care provider?

We are considered a primary care practice, so we treat all conditions that a primary care provider would. We view the body as a whole and are not considered specialists. If you need to see an OBGYN, cardiologist, or surgeon, for example, you will be referred appropriately. The costs associated with the services provided by specialists or any other healthcare provider outside of 5900 Health are not covered by your membership. Beyond visits, the primary mode of communication with our care team is messaging. We answer within 24-48 hours during the week and are usually avaialable to address urgent issues on weekends and holidays. We are often able to take care of acute issues without the need for a visit. A few points to remember about your membership: 1. We do not take insurance. However, we can provide paperwork for you to submit for out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance. 2. We are not always available for same-day emergency appointments. 3. If you have a medical emergency, we recommend that you visit urgent care or an ER.

+ Is 5900 Health covered by insurance?

We do not accept any form of insurance. 5900 Health is classified as a primary care practice, but insurance companies don’t recognize our membership model. After each medical visit, we can provide a superbill that you can submit to insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. Many members choose to pay for their supplements/labs/imaging using FSA/HSA dollars.

+ Why doesn't 5900 Health take insurance?

Many people who have contacted our office for our services have asked us why we do not bill insurance directly when other medical providers do. We fully understand the financial challenge this presents to some patients, and we wish there were a way for us to bill your insurance company. Unfortunately, at this time, there is not. Here is why:

When clinics bill health insurance companies directly, the healthcare providers are required to become participating providers. The providers must sign a contract that allows the insurance company to determine which services they will and will not provide and how much they can charge for those services. In general, insurance companies are not focused on any preventive or wellness services. They are heavily invested in the conventional model of health care that too often relies on drugs and surgery. We are committed to the functional medicine model that addresses the underlying causes of your symptoms with specific nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.

+ What is included with my plan?

Healthcare provider visit(s), online invoicing and automatic monthly billing. Easy online scheduling, unlimited messaging with your care team through an online patient portal, prescriptions for medications and supplement recommendations. In addition to our services, you’ll have access to: our online supplement store at a discounted price, access to the online 5900 Health community, invitations to our members-only events and deals from our wellness partners.

+ What types of diagnostic testing does 5900 Health perform?

We offer both standard blood work and in-depth specialty testing to help construct a comprehensive picture of your health and better inform treatment. A personalized testing plan will be recommended by your provider. All tests, however, are optional. Some of our most frequently prescribed specialty tests assess horomones, cortisol, genetics, microbiome health, and toxic metal levels.

+ Is testing included in my membership fee? What costs can I expect to see?

Our healthcare providers will work with you to customize testing orders based on your health needs and personal preferences. Costs for blood work and specialty tests are not included in the membership price. Some of the blood work is usually covered by insurance. Specialty tests range in cost from $100 - $350. These tests, however, are completely optional.

+ Do I need health insurance if I have a 5900 Health membership?

A 5900 Health membership does not replace health insurance. We advise all members to maintain a separate health insurance plan of their choosing. Oftentimes, a membership with a healthshare plan is a good option for our members. For blood work, insurance occasionally offers partial to full coverage. Please also note that the Affordable Care Act includes a requirement that all U.S. citizens purchase health insurance. A 5900 Health membership does not meet this requirement.

+ How are your supplements different than what I can get on Amazon?

We recommend nutritional supplements as an adjunct to dietary and lifestyle modification. This approach is central to the well-researched and science-based practice of functional medicine, which all of our professional staff have studied. We sell therapeutic, quality nutritional supplements as a service to our patients. With a few exceptions, we do not sell nutritional products of similar quality to those that are widely available over the counter. We purchase high-quality nutritional products from the top nutritional research laboratories in North America.
